Introduction
Hepatitis C virus (HCV), an RNA virus in the Flaviviridae family, is a major causative agent of liver diseases such as chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. One significant feature of HCV infection is its high tendency towards persistence with 75% of acute infections turning into chronic infection. As a result, chronic HCV infection is a major worldwide public health problem, with a prevalence of approximately 170 million virus carriers in the world, more than 20% of which are in China. There is no vaccine available for preventing HCV infection yet, and the approved clinical treatment for chronic HCV infection, a combination of pegylated-interferon and ribavirin, is only about 50% effective and has strong side effect. Therefore, the development of an effective vaccine and antiviral therapies will have huge impact on the public health in China and around the world.

Thanks for the philanthropic support from our partner, AREVA Group, we are able to set up this course. We have successfully held two Pasteur-Areva courses on Avian Flu and AIDS in the past two years. The 3rd Pasteur-Areva course will give a comprehensive overview of epidemiology, virology, molecular and cellular biology on HCV and prevention strategies against HCV infection, and also, there will be the practical course on the cell culture system of HCV.
