Although a huge amount of scientific information has been gained in immunology, the immune system is rarely dealt with as a “system”. In addition, when this is done, more attention given to its cognitive properties than to the basic architecture of the system itself. It will be shown that notions commonly used in the analysis of complex systems, particularly that of robustness, are valuable, and offer a new paradigm for the understanding of the system and of some of its disorders, namely autoimmune diseases.
